Alne Wood Park

Green burial site reception building Competition entry

This competition for a site in Warwickshire called for a non-denominational reception building to provide commemorative services for a green burial park. The site for the building was occupied by a barn, and the volume of this was not to be exceeded with the new structure.

We proposed a modern barn, constructed from materials sourced as far as possible from the estate. The best agricultural buildings have a sympathy and harmony with the landscape that contains them - a kind of ‘rightness’ - arising out of their strong, simple forms and affinity with nature which is the result of employing materials gathered from the surrounding landscape in their construction. The building would be part of, and contained by, the landscape that in turn shelters its occupants while framing and re-presenting the surrounding landscape to them.
