Extension and refurbishment of house in Blackheath, London

The design for this kitchen extension to a Victorian villa is a trabeated composition in red. A series of terraces, steps and arches in red bricks and pamments negotiates the levels between the house and garden and provides a plinth for the pavilion-like extension. This has stacked red tile columns and red terrazzo mullions, with an entablature of tile and brick. A pyramid shaped roof over the kitchen provides ample light and a sense of loftiness inside, with red tiles externally.

Internally the project involved the conversion of the cellar to utility and wine storage and extensive joinery fittings and bathroom fit-outs. We really wanted to design a crow’s nest lookout on the roof, accessed from the children’s playroom, to look down over the Greenwich Naval College and river.
