Motiroti is an active charity, commissioning and producing a wide range of public and performance art, whose offices required refurbishing and reorganising. Taking inspiration from the arrangement of many of the 17th Century City of London churches - where dark wood panelling holds the congregation and contains the earthly realm under the light-filled, white and gilded vaults above - we proposed a dark datum at desk level to contain everyday clutter, leaving the space above the desks clear and bright for the contemplation of the ideas with which Motiroti work. Lacquered galvanised steel conduits are analogous to the gilding on elaborate 17th Century ceilings, while simple MDF furniture organises the space and provides a pop of colour. Translucent curtains allow more introverted working when required.
