South Downs barns

Barn conversion, West Sussex

Set in a hollow high on the South Downs, this project involves the conversion of a complex of barns into a single dwelling. Our client is particularly interested in the project’s relationship to the immediate and wider landscape of the Downs, and in the craft of traditional building methods.

Of the three barns on the site, one has been converted previously but requires significant alteration, another is a watertight shell only, and a new barn is to be constructed on the footprint of an earlier building to enclose a new courtyard; the yard of the earlier farmstead.

The building will include generous living and sleeping accommodation, a painting studio, private chapel, library, stables and a bell-tower. Landscape proposals include a dew pond, wind-blown hawthorns, and a rammed chalk walled garden.
